Is Selena Gomez Right or Left-Handed?

One of the most popular celebrities there is today, Selena Gomez is a widely successful singer, songwriter, actress, and television producer. Could this star be one of the few left-handed people there are in the world?

Selena Gomez is right-handed. The hand with which she writes and how she plays sports are both strong indicators of a person’s handedness, and Gomez both writes and plays sports right-handed.

Read on below to find out more about where the curiosity about Gomez’s handedness may have originated, and how she likes to spend her time.

Right-Handed Writing

While it can sometimes be difficult to tell which hand is someone’s dominant hand, which hand that person writes with and the way that they play sports or use tools are both clear indicators.

People with a strong preference for one hand usually write and play sports either completely right-handed or completely left-handed, while more ambidextrous people may use one hand to write but their dominant hand changes when it comes to sports.

Gomez both writes and plays sports with her right hand as her dominant hand. She always signs autographs right-handed, like in this picture, and in the various sports she has played, leads with her right hand, as she throws right-handed in this picture, bats right-handed in this one, and golfs right-handed in pictures like this one.

So if she always uses her right hand, where did the curiosity about her handedness come from?

One possible origin is promotional pictures like this one from 2015, where Gomez is seen holding the lipstick with her left hand, which was used to write “now is everything” on the mirror. There is also this comparison image, taken in 2008 and 2016, where Gomez seems to change which hand she writes with from left to right.

More likely than not, the handwriting in the promotional picture is not Gomez’s work, and she posed as if she was writing with her left hand in both images, but was not actually writing. In the 2008 picture, she may have had to quickly pose for a picture and the pen just happened to be in her left hand, which is likely because she only writes with her right hand at all other times.

Though she may be ambidextrous, she strongly prefers her right hand and is only seen using her right hand in subsequent images. In the 2015 promotional picture, she was also posed as if writing with her left hand, which was probably to highlight her face and how she leans away from the writing.

In short, Gomez is not left-handed, and she is either completely right-handed or partially ambidextrous, depending on if she was posing or not in those few pictures of her writing.

Sports and Hobbies

Gomez plays sports right-handed, but what sports does she actually play?

Before she was homeschooled to focus on acting, Gomez played basketball, which was her favorite sport. In preparing for her role in the film Monte Carlo, she learned how to play polo.

While her interest didn’t stay in many team sports, she has many hobbies that keep her in shape. Her trainer, Amy Rosoff, has gotten her into activities that she likes.

Gomez and Rosoff train together anywhere from three to five days a week, and variety is the number one requirement. As Rosoff said, “I’ve always believed the best way to keep your muscles active is to mix it up. We switch things up almost every day.”
In addition to strength training, cardio, and other toning workouts, Gomez enjoys activities like yoga, Pilates, hiking, dancing, and more. Paired with stretching to relax and stay flexible, as well as keeping hydrated, Gomez has a near-perfect workout routine.
